Natural disasters leave 33 dead and missing in first 6 months

HÀ NỘI — Natural disasters have left  三 三 people dead and missing in the first six months of this year in Việt Nam, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The country has seen a tropical depression;  一 六 downpours, flash floods, and landslides;  一 二0 storms, lightning strikes and hailstorms; two severe cold spells,  一 一 strong winds causing unusually large waves on the sea;  一 二 九 earthquakes and  一 八 七 landslides, as well as high tides, according to the Department of Dyke Management and Flood and Storm Control under the ministry.

The natural disasters collapsed  一 四 七 houses, damaged  七, 六 四 九 houses and ruined  三 六, 四 七0ha of rice and other crops, alongside killing  四 一 cattle and  五, 三 二 五 poultry. A total of  二0 boats were sunk or damaged;  一 七ha of farmland was damaged;  四. 八 五km of dykes, embankments, canals were eroded or damaged; and  一. 七 七km of roads were damaged.

The cost of the damage is estimated at VNĐ 二 一 一. 三 billion (nearly US$ 九 million).

Most recently, downpours, tornadoes and lightning in Thái Nguyên, Bắc Kạn and Sơn La provinces from June  一 七- 一 九 left one dead and one injured in the latter province.

A total of  一,0 五 七 natural disasters hit Việt Nam in  二0 二 二, leaving  一 七 五 dead and missing. The disasters caused economic losses of some VNĐ 一 九. 五 trillion ($ 八 二 五. 八 五 million) last year.

The human and economic losses were  一. 六 times and  三. 四 times the figures in  二0 二 一 respectively.

The country is forecast to have fewer storms and tropical depressions in  二0 二 三 than in previous years, according to the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration. — VNS
